Sustainability
Principle Energy's commitment to environmental and social sustainability is an integral part of its business proposition. It is building an enterprise that will contribute meaningfully to the African economy while conserving and protecting natural resources.
Environmental sustainability
Principle Energy is dedicated to environmental protection: from its primary pursuit of renewable energy, to the energy-efficiency of its sugar cane feedstocks, to the land and resource management and waste reutilisation in its operations. It has conducted extensive ecological and biodiversity assessments and regularly monitors the environmental impact of its projects, as well as its carbon footprint.
Sugar cane is an environmentally sound crop whose cultivation improves carbon sequestration and reduces soil erosion. By-products of Principle Energy's ethanol production will be used to fertilise croplands to maximise resource efficiency, and co-generated power will fuel both its operations and help meet the energy needs of local communities. Agricultural inputs are to be minimised, and water and land resources will be efficiently managed according to best practice.
Social sustainability
Principle Energy's business model respects the most valuable of African resources: its people. Its agricultural and energy production efforts are creating jobs in regions with substantial willing workforces, and Principle Energy will create technical training programmes to ensure rewarding employment. Its strategy includes the establishment of communication links, roads, housing, schools and clinics in the areas where its ethanol projects are built. Principle Energy will source goods and supplies locally to the extent competitiveness allows - all of which will elevate the quality of life in the region and foster energy and economic independence for local and regional African communities.
